Alternatives to Marriage Project

The Alternatives to Marriage Project welcomes interns during the summer and during the school year. It’s a great opportunity to experience the inner workings of a small nonprofit organization, and to make a difference for unmarried people through our day-to-day work.

All interns assist with general office and clerical work, and may also assist with research, material writing and design, responding to informational requests from journalists and members of the public, organizational planning, and other short- and long-term projects, based on the organization’s needs and the intern’s skills and interests. Interns will have the opportunity to work both closely with staff and take on independent projects.

AtMP seeks interns who understand and support their mission, are hard-working, are able to successfully complete projects, and are comfortable using computers. Strong writing and marketing skills are a plus, but not required.

As a grassroots organization, AtMP is not able to pay interns. Some of their interns have been able to arrange for funding and/or course credit from their school. Time requirements are flexible, ranging from 2 to 25 hours per week during the school year. Summer and January-term interns generally work around 15-20 hours per week in the office, with opportunity for some additional work from home.

The AtMP office is located in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn, NYC (they recently moved from their previous Albany location), easily accessible by subway and bus. Unfortunately, they are not able to assist with housing.

To apply:

Send your resume and cover letter to the contact information below or paste the text into their online form. If you’d like to send them as attached documents, use the form to request the email address to send an internship application – they will send you an email with the address (they have removed all email addresses from this website as spam-prevention).

In your cover letter, they’re especially interested in these topics:

  • Why you want to be an intern for AtMP and what excites you about its mission and activities
  • Any special skills or qualifications that would assist you in the internship
  • Any previous internship or volunteer experience you’ve had
  • Does an AtMP internship relate to what you’re studying in school, or to what you want to do after college (this is not a requirement!)
  • What you hope to get out of an internship with AtMP
  • What dates you’re available to intern (summer, school term, etc.)

Due dates:

Internship applications are considered on a rolling basis — send your materials anytime.
