Vital Voices Global Partnership Human Rights Internship

Vital Voices Global Partnership is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering women engaged in building participatory democracies, stronger economies, and anti-trafficking and human rights practices.

The Human Rights Program of Vital Voices is looking to select several interns for the summer of 2007. This is an unpaid internship with positions in New York City and Washington, DC. It requires a commitment of 30 hours per week. School credits can be arranged.

The position supports the Human Rights Program, which has a particular emphasis on human trafficking, but is not limited to this issue. We are looking to expand our programming to include domestic violence and other violence against women and HIV/AIDS, and the intern will help in developing these other two program areas. Intern responsibilities primarily include research of women’s issues in various countries, and current national anti-trafficking and domestic violence legislation, as well as non-governmental, governmental and international efforts to combat trafficking and violence against women in general. This research will be used for special reports, grant writing, and the publication of the quarterly newsletter, The Trafficking Alert. Interns are also responsible for maintaining anti-trafficking resources and public awareness materials in addition to editing grant proposals, letters, and brochures. Some administrative tasks are required and interns are encouraged to attend various conferences and events in which Vital Voices participates.

An internship with Vital Voices is a great opportunity to learn about the policy aspect of human rights while also learning about current trends and best practices to combat human trafficking.

Qualifications:

• Interest in women’s rights and specific knowledge on human trafficking preferred
• Excellent writing and editing skills
• Strong research and issue analytic skills
• Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, and database knowledge required; Power Point and graphic design preferred)
• Strong organizational skills and administrative capabilities
• Second language skill preferred
• Ability to work independently and as a team member
• Attention to detail

To apply: Please e-mail a letter of interest, resume, one writing sample of no more than 10 pages, and two references with contact information to the address below. Use “Human Rights Internship” as the subject of your e-mail. Only complete applications will be reviewed.
