Human Rights Watch offers academic semester and summer internships for undergraduate students in their New York, London, Los Angeles, Washington, DC, Brussels, and Berlin offices.
Interns may be placed in one of the following regional or thematic programs at HRW: Africa, the Americas (does not include US or Canada), Asia, Europe & Central Asia, Middle East & North Africa, United States, Arms, Children’s Rights, Women’s Rights, HIV/AIDS & Human Rights, Business & Human Rights, Refugees, Emergency Response, Terrorism/Counterterrorism, International Justice, and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Rights. Internships also are available with the Advocacy, Communications & Press, Development & Outreach, Legal & Policy, Human Resources and Finance & Administration departments as well as the International Film Festival.
DESCRIPTION:
Undergraduate internships are primarily administrative and clerical in nature, but other projects can be assigned as they arise and match the student’s interests and abilities, including research, drafting documents, translating, and helping researchers prepare for missions. Internships are unpaid. Academic credit and funding can sometimes be arranged through your university or academic program.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated and reliable, with a strong interest in international human rights. Relevant coursework is highly desirable, and knowledge of foreign languages is a plus. Computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office, Internet applications) are required.
FUNDED UNDERGRADUATE INTERNSHIPS:
Metcalf Internship Program: Each year, the Jeff Metcalf Fellows Program at the University of Chicago places one summer intern in each of the New York and London offices of HRW. Applicants must be current undergraduate students at the University of Chicago. Metcalf internships last 10 weeks with a stipend of $10/hour to offset expenses. The deadline for applying to this competitive program is February 6th. Metcalf internships will be awarded by March 26th.

Everett Public Service Summer Internship Program: Each year, the Everett Public Service Internship Program places five summer interns in the New York and Washington, DC offices of HRW. In addition to the regularly-held Human Rights Watch staff meetings and special events, the Everett Program offers bi-weekly guest lectures and events. Internships last 10 weeks with a modest stipend to offset expenses. Applicants must be current students at (or immediate graduates of) U.S. colleges or graduate schools, with a minimum of two semesters completed, and must be able to attend all scheduled Everett program events.
The deadline for applying to this competitive program is March 14. Everett internships will be awarded by April 1.
